GTCC to partner with Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME)

Today, Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) announced a partnership with the North Carolina Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (NC FAME) Program. The FAME program is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in STEM-related fields in manufacturing and provides a two-year, debt-free associate degree with the goal of equipping students with the skills required for a rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape.

A 17-year-old dual enrollment student and a longtime staff member have been named the winners of Guilford Technical Community College’s MLK Jr. Service Award. The award, being presented for the first time this year, honors members of the GTCC community who demonstrate a commitment to Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideals and help further the college’s commitment to diversity. A GTCC employee and a GTCC student will receive the award each year.

Update on Guilford Technical Community College Data Security Incident

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) was recently the victim of a ransomware attack. As a result of the incident, GTCC immediately launched an investigation, with the assistance of leading cybersecurity experts, the FBI, and other state agencies to determine what happened and to remediate the attack. This investigation is currently ongoing. The forensic investigation confirmed that the cybercriminal(s) gained access to GTCC’s network prior to the attack and that personal information may have been accessible as a result.

GTCC Launches Operation Workforce Recovery with Training Focused on High-Demand Careers

GTCC Community Donates Personal Protective Equipment to Area Health System Partners

Faculty and staff at Guilford Technical Community College collected personal protective equipment to donate to area health systems who are on the front lines fighting the COVID-19 outbreak. The PPE donation included over 2,000 items ranging from much-needed surgical masks, surgical gloves, face shields, protective eyewear, and gowns. The items were given to Cone Health, Novant Health, and Wake Health.

Guilford Technical Community College will host a series of events in March to celebrate Women’s History Month and the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. A keynote lecture by North Carolina Superior Court Judge Lora Cubbage on March 18 will headline the Valiant Women of Strength series. The college’s Black Student Union will lead a book discussion on March 11 and a presentation outlining Voter ID law changes on March 25 will complete the schedule of events.

Guilford Technical Community College contributed $1 billion to Guilford County’s economy in fiscal 2017-2018, according to an economic impact study conducted by Economic Modeling Specialists (Emsi). The study measured the economic impact created by GTCC on the business community and the benefits the college generates in return for the investments made by students, taxpayers, and society.

GTCC Flight Team Soars at the 2019 Region X Flight Competition

Guilford Technical Community College’s Flight Team recently returned from the 2019 Region X flight competition hosted by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA). The competition was held in Danville, Virginia, Oct. 16-19 at the Danville Regional Airport. The G-Tech Flyers captured second place in ground events, third place in flight events, and earned an overall third place finish in the three-day competition.

Guilford Technical Community College will launch a Truck Driving School in an effort to help local industry address a shortage of drivers. The program will provide the necessary training for individuals to operate a tractor-trailer. ECSU Signs Aviation Science Articulation Agreement with Three NC Community Colleges

Three North Carolina community colleges have joined forces with Elizabeth City State University to educate the next generation of aviators. During an articulation agreement ceremony Friday, Feb. 15, ECSU officials signed agreements with officials from three North Carolina community colleges: Guilford Technical Community College, Lenoir Community College, and Sandhills Community College. The agreement with the colleges will bring community college transfer students to ECSU’s signature aviation science program in Elizabeth City.

Guilford Technical Community College has launched a new program to provide employment training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The POWER (Providing Opportunities for Workforce Education Review) Pathways program gives students the necessary skills to find meaningful career or volunteer opportunities. The college’s first program, a 13-week course in food service, begins this month at GTCC’s Greensboro and High Point campuses.

Guilford Technical Community College Performing Arts Theatre will present its spring production, “The Flick,” Feb. 21-23 at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts on GTCC’s High Point campus. All performances will begin at 7 p.m. “The Flick,” by American playwright Annie Baker, won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for drama. The play follows three underpaid employees who work in a rundown movie theater in central Massachusetts as they mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state.

GTCC Board of Trustees Approves Budget for Medlin Campus Center Renovation

The Medlin Campus Center on Guilford Technical Community College’s Jamestown campus will be receiving a much-needed facelift. The college’s Board of Trustees has approved a $19.4 million construction budget to renovate the building. During the renovation, all student-facing services will be temporarily relocated to the Percy H. Sears Applied Technologies Building effective January 2019.

Guilford Apprenticeship Partners Offer Record Number Apprenticeships

Signing day is no longer just for athletes. On Thursday, Aug. 16, Guilford Apprenticeship Partners (GAP) extended 40 high school students and recent graduates apprenticeships during a signing day ceremony at Guilford Technical Community College. The 2018 GAP apprentice class is nearly triple the size of the inaugural class and represents $5 million in scholarships. The program is entering its third year.
