JAMESTOWN, N.C. (August 8, 2024) – Guilford Technical Community College’s basic law enforcement training program has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
GTCC becomes just the second North Carolina community college to achieve CALEA accreditation, joining Wake Technical Community College.
CALEA is the premier credentialing association for public safety agencies and provides accreditation services for law enforcement organizations, public safety communication centers, public safety training academies, and campus security agencies.
“GTCC’s basic law enforcement training (BLET) receiving the CALEA accreditation is a milestone that signifies our commitment to excellence in law enforcement training,” said Jeremy Bennett D.P.A., GTCC associate vice president of instruction. “This recognition reflects our dedication to maintaining the highest standards of accountability, integrity, and professionalism.
“As the second community college in North Carolina to earn this honor, GTCC stands as a beacon of quality and a leader in shaping the future of public safety.”
During CALEA’s site-based assessment review, 19 interviews regarding topical areas were conducted with GTCC staff and members of the community.
GTCC’s basic law enforcement training is an accredited program of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
Once successfully completing this program, students are eligible to take the written comprehensive state certification examination, which is one of the requirements mandated by the North Carolina administrative code for employment as a police officer or deputy sheriff.
GTCC’s BLET program began in 1981 and has graduated 112 classes.
