Frequently Asked Questions

Our courses are open to adults in the community who are 18 years of age or older. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds must complete a minor release form before entering our program.

Please contact your Guilford County Schools counselor or principal to learn more about the minor release process and obtain the required signatures. Or, if you are not currently enrolled in Guilford County Schools, contact Guilford County Schools’ Drop-out Prevention Office at 336-621- 4017 to learn more about the minor release process and obtain the necessary signatures.

That’s the best part. This program is completely free! We even have distance learning devices available for check out and HSE testing vouchers to pay for qualified students to take the GED or HiSET exams.

You are required to attend the Adult Education program classes that you register for regularly.  Students are expected to commit to attend 80% of their assigned class meeting times and to take periodic progress tests on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) as required by the program for continued participation.

Once registered, students who do not meet our minimum attendance requirements and/or remain absent for 90 consecutive days will have to wait until the next July 1 in order to re-enter the program.

If you are enrolled in an online class only, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 12 hours of coursework each week.

If you are enrolled in both a face-to face-class and an online class, you will be expected to complete a minimum of six (6) hours of coursework online in addition to your classroom hours.

Students must also abide by the GTCC Code of Conduct to maintain good standing in our program.

To register for General Education Development (GED) or Adult High School (AHS) programs, you must complete a mandatory orientation and placement testing session.

We have opportunities for students to enroll online or in person during orientation most months of the year (July through March). However, we do not admit new students between April 9 and June 30. July orientation dates will be posted here for the 2023-2024 school year.

To enroll in our program, students will be required to come in person to take a pre-test, and to continue, students periodically will be required to come to campus for post-testing.

Yes, we offer online GED® courses. We have online classes that meet day and evening and allow students to log in to work on their reading and math skills at their convenience and to interact with their teacher and other students live via Microsoft Teams. Sign up at orientation.

This program is for adults 18 and older who want to earn a high school diploma. The program provides courses in a lab setting or online. Students must provide a sealed official transcript from the last school that they attended showing at least 15 high school credits earned prior to coming to GTCC, maintain strict attendance, and complete 22 credit-bearing courses to receive a diploma. Classes may include, but are not limited to:

Requirements will differ per student, so please contact the Adult Education Office at your respective campus for a review of your completed and required credits. 

We currently offer the following tests:

  • GED®:  Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics
  • HiSET®:  Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics

We also offer a new option for students called Multiple Pathways to High School Equivalency (MPHSE) which allows qualified students to combine traditional high school credits, Adult High School credits, High School Equivalency assessments, and a technology competency assessment to earn a High School Equivalency.

Limited vouchers are available for qualified GTCC students to cover the costs of HSE official tests.

Visit one of the test vendor websites below to set up an account, schedule a test, and/or request a transcript.  You will need an email address to set up an account.

You may sign up for the GED® test by creating a My GED™ account with GED® Testing Service at https://www.ged.com. If you need assistance creating an account or registering for your GED® Test, you may contact GED® Testing Service at 1-877-EXAM-GED® (877-392-6433).

HiSET test takers  may sign up for and schedule their HiSET exams at https://hiset.ets.org/  

GED®  and HiSET graduates all earn a High School Equivalency diploma issued by the North Carolina Community College System. Transcripts for graduates are available for order on each of the respective test websites or visit https://diplomasender.com/#/ to request an official transcript.

Want to earn a college certificate tuition-free while you complete your GED or AHS diploma?

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for Adult Education students: Basic Skills Plus, a dynamic program designed to equip students with a competitive edge in today’s employment market.

Qualified students (based on CASAS and TABE scores) are enrolled in both High School Equivalency and selected Guilford Technical Community College courses tuition-free at the same time, with the support of an academic advisor.
