“The Honors Program gave me the structure and opportunities I was missing,” Jenna White said. “It’s been life-changing for me.”

Excitement and opportunity go hand in hand for Jenna White, a rising star in the GTCC Honors Program. With plans to graduate in May 2025 to pursue a double major in biology and chemistry at a four-year university. White credits the Honors Program with enriching her academic career and setting her up for future success.

“The Honors Program gave me the structure and opportunities I was missing,” White said. “It’s been life-changing for me.”

White first learned about the GTCC Honors Program from a professor who recognized her potential. The program, tailored for high-achieving students, offers advanced learning opportunities, leadership development, and strong networking connections. For White, it was exactly what she needed to overcome frustrations in early classes that didn’t fully engage her.

“Early on, I felt like I wasn’t being challenged enough in my courses. But with [the honors program], I get to learn more and really dig into the subjects that interest me,” she said. “That excitement renewed my focus on education and motivated me to keep going.”

From the start, White says she found the coursework in the program both rigorous and rewarding. Honors students take on projects that encourage creativity and critical thinking, experiences that White describes as invaluable.

“For one biology class, we had to interview someone from a four-year university and create a presentation based on what we learned. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, but having that one-on-one experience made all the difference. It wasn’t just about earning a grade; it felt substantial and meaningful,” White said.

But the program isn’t all about academics. One of its most notable benefits, according to White, is the sense of community students find. With a small cohort of like-minded students, connections flourish. What might have started as a study partnership becomes a lifelong friendship.

“I’ve made great friends through the program,” White said. “Having people around who are going through the same challenges as you creates this incredible bond. It keeps you strong and reminds you you’re not alone.”

The Honors Program also encourages students to develop leadership and professional skills through monthly events focused on career readiness and personal growth. White said these opportunities have been eye-opening.

“Talking to professionals and getting advice has helped me understand the real world and how to prepare for my future,” she said. “It’s helped me build confidence in myself and my goals.”

Networking has been another hallmark of White’s experience. From connecting with peers and professors to meeting college leaders, she has embraced the program’s emphasis on building relationships.

“It’s like being at the center of this huge spiderweb of opportunities. The advisors and staff are incredible at helping us connect with people who can guide and teach us more,” White said.

For students considering the Honors Program, White offers this advice: “Do it, especially if you’re looking for more support and structure. That’s exactly what this program provides. The advisors really care and tailor the experience to your goals.”

White’s time in the program has not only enhanced her academic experience but also strengthened her determination to pursue her big dreams. With plans to attend dental school and potentially pursue a career as a facial surgeon, she knows the foundation she’s built in the Honors Program will serve her well for years to come.

“For me, the program has been about growth,” she said. “It’s given me the tools and the confidence I need to succeed, both in college and beyond.”
