NC Auto Safety Certification
This course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements (initial and/or renewal) for the Vehicle Safety Inspection Program administered by the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, License, and Theft Bureau.
Upon completion, a student will understand the rules, regulations, and procedures for conducting a vehicle safety inspection; be able to inspect a vehicle properly; and be prepared to sit for the state certification exam. Initial and recertification classes will be eight hours of instruction. The registration fee includes the workbook used during class. Registration is required.
GTCC recommends that students seeking initial certification take the Safety class before the OBD II class.
Students are required to:
- Bring to class an LT-310 form signed by the owner, partner, or officer of the inspection station
- Have a valid NC driver’s license to be certified to perform inspections

In person: Complete the Continuing Education Registration Form and bring it with your payment (check, cash, credit card, or money order) to one of the GTCC campuses.

Students must:
- Bring LT-310 form signed by the owner, partner, or officer of the inspection station
- Have a valid N.C. driver’s license to be certified to perform inspections
Students who successfully complete the class will have their LT-310 form submitted electronically to the appropriate North Carolina State Highway Patrol district for certification. All required documentation is transmitted within two business days following the conclusion of the class.
Requirements for successful completion:
- Attendance: Must be in class 100% of the class hours
- Must pass the Certification Exam with 80% or better
Students will be dropped from the class if they miss the first day and will not be eligible for refund.
The college will make a 100% refund of registration fees if you officially withdraw from class before the first meeting. Also if the class is canceled or full, GTCC will make a full refund. The college will refund 75% of the registration fee (of tuition only) if you officially withdraw from the class on the first day of class or before the class reaches the census date. The census date varies from class to class. Non-attendance is not a basis for a refund.
Submit this form before the start of class, or no later than the census date (the 10% point of the course) to the program coordinator, administrative assistant, or instructor.
