Guilford Technical Community College students will have the opportunity to show off their accomplishments with the college’s annual Students Shine presentation day Thursday, April 10 on the Jamestown Campus.
Open to the public, the free event on the second floor of the Medlin Campus Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. will showcase the work of GTCC students with live performances, displays, demonstrations and presentations representing various departments and programs across the college, including theater, jazz, cosmetology, ceramics, culinary arts, fire protection technology, dental, automotive, welding, and more.
The following are just a few of the presentations scheduled for the Students Shine presentation day.
The culinary arts department will present food art which they have formed, baked and painted using dead dough. Dead dough is a dough without yeast that doesn’t rise and is very dense and hard when baked so it holds its shape. Once shaped and baked, the dough can be painted or colored easily.
Students produced their own design based on one of two themes, either nature or entertainment.
A student from the early childhood education program will feature a presentation on the effects of excessive technology usage on literacy development in elementary students. It will include recommendations for best practices, primarily in classroom settings, that can be applied to parents and others who have connections with children.
A student from aviation will make a presentation on speedcubing, a mind sport that involves rapid solving of combinations like the Rubik’s Cube, and how the hobby can help with learning and development. The presentation will show how the sport/hobby should not only be considered just for those of high intellect but can also provide an outlet for learning and development to anyone willing to challenge themselves.
An art student will demonstrate how clay is capable of producing unique and expressive forms. Through sculpting, the student will use various construction techniques to produce figures that have personality and emotion, bringing life to a static medium.
