Engineering is the application of science and math to solve problems to improve the world around us. The Associate in Engineering (AE) degree program is intended for students who plan to transfer to a four-year engineering degree program.

In this program, students take general education and pre-major electives at GTCC then complete their engineering program of choice, such as chemical, electrical, bio, civil, or mechanical engineering, after transferring to a four-year school. This program is ideal for students interested in any area of engineering and is designed to easily transfer to all five University of North Carolina System schools that offer engineering programs – N.C. State University, University of North Carolina – Charlotte (UNCC), East Carolina University, N.C. A&T University, and Western Carolina. Admission to engineering programs is highly competitive, and admission is not guaranteed.

This music degree is designed for transfer to a four-year university music program of study. If you prefer smaller classes, more one-on-one interaction and feedback, and excellent preparation for your transfer and placement in a university music program, this is the degree that will best prepare you for success. AutoDesk's AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks

AutoDesk's AutoCAD and Revit are widely used CAD software. AutoCAD is used primarily as a drafting tool, while Revit is used primarily for building information modeling (BIM). GTCC's AutoCAD and Revit courses may be useful for those in construction, manufacturing, and logistics, and may also be of interest to those in computer software or graphics and design. This spring GTCC will be offering Revit Advanced and SolidWorks.

If you are interested in an aviation-related career involving flight operational support, then the Aviation Management degree is for you. This could involve working in a corporate flight department, or managing a flight school, or working in flight support operations at an airline or in the aircraft maintenance or manufacturing industry. This degree does not require flight training and is focused on providing you with a fundamental knowledge of flight concepts and terminology pertaining to meteorology, aircraft systems, airline operations, and flight safety practices.

If you already have a degree in another field but want some background in aviation and flight operations, then you can do one or both of the certificate options. Option A covers management principles, aircraft systems and basic flight operations. Option B covers aviation operations management, flight safety principles, air transportation industry specifics, supply chain management and aircraft structures.

The Aviation Systems Technology Program provides you with the knowledge and skills to qualify for an aircraft mechanic’s certificate with airframe and/or powerplant ratings. The curriculum is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under 14 CFR Part 147, which governs aviation maintenance schools. This is a limited enrollment program.

GTCC Aviation has relationships with local, regional, and national employers who have constant demand for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. You can apply for open internships and apprenticeships along with full-time or part-time employment during and after program completion.  

Boeing’s recent market study highlights that aircraft technician demand in the U.S. will continue to increase over the next 15 to 20 years because aircraft deliveries, market segment growth, and retirement of an aging workforce.

New Career Opportunity in Manufacturing

Partnered with the training provider Carolina Battery Institute (CBI) and the clean energy employer Soelect, this course provides an in-depth understanding of overall Lithium-ion battery principles, battery manufacturing processes, and testing (skill or method). The course will prepare students for entry-level work as an Electric Battery Assembly Technician in the growing EV battery manufacturing field.

Average rate of pay is $19.23-$26.44 per hour.

The Biotechnology curriculum is designed to meet the increasing demands for skilled laboratory technicians in various fields of biological and chemical technology. Course work emphasizes biology, chemistry, mathematics, and technical communications.

Graduates may find employment in various areas of industry and government including research and development, manufacturing, sales, and customer service. 

The Biotechnology Program at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is a collaborative educational program offered by Alamance Community College (ACC) and GTCC. Students are able to complete the first two semesters as well as some selected general education courses from the second year at GTCC. Students who successfully complete at least the first two semesters at GTCC will be admitted to the Alamance Community College program and will be able to complete the program requirements at ACC. Alamance Community College will award the Associate of Applied Science degree to all students who meet degree requirements.

The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC)^® credentialing system leading to a CPT^® 4.0 covers the four critical production functions common to all sectors of manufacturing: Safety, Quality Practices & Measurement, Manufacturing Processes & Production, and Maintenance Awareness. Each area is addressed with a separate assessment.

This program is ideal for those with limited or no prior knowledge of manufacturing to begin a career pathway in the high-demand manufacturing industry.

At GTCC, we offer a curriculum aimed at getting you into the workforce quickly and effectively! We train you on “state-of-the-art” equipment, using the industry endorsed I-CAR curriculum. GTCC’s collision repair program is NATEF accredited and has won the Skills USA state championships for collision repair 13 times between 2002 and 2017.

The Collision Repair Program at GTCC offers three pathways to help you meet your goals.

• Certificate- Designed with a short time frame in mind, the certificate program is 16 weeks and is only offered in the fall. It covers the basics that will give you enough knowledge and skillset to enter the workforce at an entry level position.
• Diploma- Composed of three semesters, this pathway is designed to produce a technician that can immediately begin work as an apprentice in a shop where, depending on your skill level, you may remain under a senior technician for as little as 30-90 days.
• AAS Degree- The Associate Degree program is only if you are looking to push your skills even further with advanced collision classes, including mechanical repair, vehicle detailing, shop management, and additional classes designed to offer you the foundational and advanced knowledge required to work in and advance into leadership roles.

North Carolina Families Accessing Services through Technology (NC FAST) is a program designed to improve the way the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and county departments of social services do business. NC FAST introduces new technological tools and business processes that will enable workers to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time assisting families.

This NCFast class certificate is a preferred qualification for the DSS income maintenance caseworker jobs available in Guilford and surrounding counties. But to be selected as a potential candidate, you must meet one of the minimum qualifications listed in the job postings:

• Graduation from high school or equivalency and four years of experience listed below.
  OR
• Associate degree and two years of experience in clerical or other public contact experience, which includes negotiating, interviewing, explaining and gathering information, gathering and compiling data, analysis of data, and/or performance of mathematical or legal tasks.
  OR
• Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.

Medical Interpreters typically work in healthcare settings and help patients communicate with doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. The Quick Careers Medical Interpreter program consists of a series of three courses* designed to not only prepare students for a career as a Spanish/English Medical Interpreter but also to prepare them to earn Medical Interpreter Certification.

GTCC offers a Medication Administration Aide course for Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who have an active listing on the nurse aide registry. This course provides a wonderful opportunity for career enhancement to nurse aides who are interested in working in skilled nursing facilities as a medication aide.

This course is designed to meet training requirements for the North Carolina Board of Nursing Medication Aide Certification. The training prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to long term care residents. Course topics include scope of duties; legal and ethical responsibilities; administration of medications by various routes; infection control; and documentation including commonly used abbreviations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate and are then eligible to take the state competency exam administered under NC Division of Health Services Regulation.

This course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements (initial and/or renewal) for the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Emissions Inspection Program administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, License, and Theft Bureau.

Upon completion, a student will understand the rules, regulations, and procedures for conducting an OBD emissions inspection; be able to inspect a vehicle properly; and be prepared to take the state certification exam. Initial and recertification classes will be eight hours of instruction. The registration fee includes the workbook used during class. Registration is required.

GTCC recommends that students seeking initial certification take the safety class before the OBD II class.

Registered nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals in the United States. GTCC offers an Associate Degree in Nursing that prepares you for licensure as a Registered Nurse. RNs help individuals, families, and communities achieve and maintain health. RNs develop a plan of nursing care and coordinate the implementation of the plan of care with the healthcare team. Nursing care relies on physicians but also requires independence to carry out care plans.

Employment opportunities are available in a variety of settings, including hospitals, medical offices, urgent care centers, home healthcare, industry, schools, and long-term care facilities. 

The Associate Degree Nursing program at GTCC is approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

The Nursing Assistant program consists of 214 hours of classroom and clinical studies and takes approximately three months to complete. Nurse Assistants work in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, private homes, home health agencies, assisted living facilities, hospice, and medical doctors' offices. Completion of the program qualifies you to sit for the N.C. State Nursing Aide examination and if successful leads to placement on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry.

This 48-hour course consists of a brief review of the NA I theory curriculum, selected NA I skills, and preparation for the state written and skill exams. Successful completion of this refresher course will provide individuals with a review of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that must be demonstrated on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

Note: If you have taken the North Carolina NNAAP test three times within a two-year period, and failed, you are ineligible to take a refresher class and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course. References to this rule may be found in the NC Nurse Aide I Candidate Handbook) Additionally, if your license expired prior to January 2020, you are ineligible for the refresher and must re-take the complete Nursing Assistant 1 course.

The Office Administration program prepares you for employment in administrative support positions in a dynamic workplace. These include the following:

The Paralegal Technology curriculum prepares you to perform legal tasks and assist lawyers with many types of legal work. A paralegal does not practice law, give legal advice, or represent clients in a court of law, but they can assist with any legal work a lawyer does. The Paralegal Technology program's primary goal is to provide you with the legal knowledge and practical skills necessary to become a competent, ethical professional.

Paralegals play an important role in allowing lawyers to provide high-quality, reasonably priced legal services. As a result, it is a fast-growing field. Paralegals, sometimes also called legal assistants, work in law firms, government agencies, business organizations, and anywhere else a lawyer might work. After completing a two-year degree, many paralegals go on to get a bachelor's degree, and some even go to law school. Pharmacy technicians are supervised by licensed pharmacists and perform duties that do not require the pharmacist’s expertise, such as labeling prescription bottles and helping patients complete medical insurance forms. Technicians have several duties that may include assisting with prescriptions by counting pills, measuring medications, and labeling products; verifying prescriptions from doctors; and maintaining patient records and insurance information.

Phlebotomy is taught through classwork, student laboratory, and clinical experiences. You will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions, including vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles, and blood culture specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. You will be taught specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. You will learn the theory and principles of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory tests and perform the tests in the student laboratory.

Phlebotomists play a vital role in the lives of patients and are critical members of healthcare teams. The accurate collection of specimens is the foundation on which doctors and other medical professionals monitor patients' health status.

Employment of phlebotomists is projected to increase by 22 percent from 2014 to 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians work in settings such as hospitals and diagnostic medical laboratories. Starting hourly wage is $16 to $18 an hour.

The Plumbing Certificate program is designed to help you acquire basic skills to assist with plumbing systems installation and repairs in residential and light commercial buildings. Coursework includes sketching diagrams, interpretation of blueprints, and practices in plumbing assembly. You will gain knowledge of state codes and requirements. You will develop skills through hands-on participation in a lab and at job sites.

The Radiography curriculum prepares you to be a radiographer, a skilled healthcare professional who uses radiation to produce images of the human body. Radiography courses include face-to-face traditional courses (lectures and labs), clinical rotations, and synchronous online lectures. Students must have access to computers and internet resources. Computer labs are available for students on campus.
