GTCC To Host Science Open House

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — On April 7, Guilford Technical Community College’s Engineering, Physics, and Astronomy departments will host an open house in Science Hall on GTCC’s Jamestown Campus 6 p.m.–8:30 p.m.

The open house is an official 2017 North Carolina Science Festival event and will feature interactive demonstrations in chemistry, physics, geology, biology, and engineering. Tours will be available throughout the evening for anyone interested in learning more about GTCC’s career pathways in the sciences. In addition, Cline Observatory will be open afterward for viewing (weather permitting).

A list of the featured demonstrations follows.

Physics: Explore the relationship between electricity and magnetism in the physics laboratory.

Biology: Anatomy and physiology activities include electrocardiograms, lung volume determinations, and dissections. Molecular biology activities include DNA gel electrophoresis.

Chemistry: Chemistry magic show/presentation plus hands-on activities.

Geology: Interactive demonstrations of geologic processes and landscape change.

Engineering: GTCC’s engineering students will demonstrate their recent projects including hovercraft designs.

Astronomy: Solar observing and information about this summer’s solar eclipse. Cline Observatory will be open for nighttime viewing at 8:30 p.m. (weather permitting).

This event is free and open to the public.
