Published on: July 20, 2017

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College will begin offering a new health care course under the umbrella of the college’s Health Careers Continuing Education division, beginning July 2017.

The Phlebotomy Technician Training course will consist of 200 hours of training. The student will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, and quality assurance. Students will spend half of the 200 hours required for the course working in the hospital environment with a skilled Phlebotomist.

Enrollment for the course will be capped at 15 students to create an intimate learning environment. Students will need to have their high school diploma or equivalent (GED).  Experience in the health care field is recommended but not required. The cost is $204.50 (does not include cost of text book). Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate and be eligible to register and take a national certification exam.

Phlebotomists play a vital role in the lives of all patients and are a critical member of the health care team. The accurate collection of specimens is the foundation on which clinicians monitor a patient’s health status.

Employment of Phlebotomists is projected to increase significantly over the next 5 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Technicians work in settings such as hospitals, clinics, physician offices and diagnostic medical laboratories. Starting hourly wage is $13 – $15.

The course will be held 9 am. – 1 pm. Monday through Thursday, on the Union Square Campus located at 124 E Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC. Clinical days and times will vary. Students can register up until the day of the class. For more information, contact Amy Leonard at 336-334-4822, ext. 53062 or aeleonard@gtcc.edu.
